XX PON, Papua sends 14 swimmers

The Papuan contingent will field 14 swimmers at the XXth National Sports Week (PON) in 2021.

Secretary of the Indonesian Swimming Association (PRSI) of Papua Province, Saharuddin Ita, said that Papuan swimmers are currently attending training camps in Jayapura, Makassar and Jakarta.

"The training center for swimming athletes is in three places, whereas in Jayapura the average athlete is still in school so they cannot leave Papua," said Saharuddin when met by reporters at the Koni Papua Office, Friday, September 25, 2020.

Saharuddin explained, XX PON in 2021, the sport of swimming will compete for 40 numbers for men and women.
Of the 40 numbers contested, Papua is targeting to win two gold medals. But of course it is expected to be more than that target.

In order to realize this target, he said, Papuan swimming athletes are still encouraged to train during the Covid-19 pandemic by prioritizing health protocols.

Saharuddin said Papua would rely on young swimmer Farrel Armandio Tangkas in the men's 100 and 200 backstroke. But it does not rule out that he (Farrel) will play in another number.

According to Saharuddin, who is also the Dean of the Faculty of Sport Sciences, Uncen, that Farrel was included in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics National Training Program.

It is known that Farrel Armandio Tangkas appeared stunning at the Jakarta Open Swimming Championship 2019. The 18-year-old swimmer broke the national record in the men's 200 meter backstroke.

In the competition at the Aquatic Stadium, Gelora Bung Karno Complex, Fareel scored a new record of 2 minutes 01.16 seconds. He sharpened his record to 2 minutes 02.31 seconds at the SEA Age Group, July 2018, Philippines. Previously, this record was held by Siman Sudartawa with a record of 2 minutes 02.44 seconds at the 2011 SEA Games.

"This Farrell is our mainstay in PON, so we will keep and monitor the training program during the Covid-19 pandemic, ask for prayers and support from the Papuan people, hopefully what is planned can be achieved," he concluded.
